US authorities decide to close the country's consulate in Wuhan

The US authorities have decided not to reopen the US consulate in Wuhan. This was reported by the Associated Press  (AP) with reference to the representative of the US Presidential Administration Donald Trump.

According to a source in AP, this step by the US authorities is explained by the desire to prevent possible retaliatory measures by the PRC government. The US Consulate in Wuhan was suspended in January this year amid the spread of the new coronavirus. Reuters previously  noted that China is considering closing the American consulate in response to Washington's demand to close the PRC Consulate General in Houston.

Earlier, the Chinese Foreign Ministry announced that the US authorities demanded to close the PRC Consulate General in Houston. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said that the Chinese authorities will take the necessary measures if Washington does not abandon its demand.

State Department spokeswoman Morgan Ortagus said the decision to close the Chinese diplomatic office in Houston was made "in order to protect American intellectual property and Americans' personal data."
