Elon Musk will hold a tunnel digging contest

Founded by Elon Musk, The Boring Company announced a tender for high-speed tunneling. The competition starts in the spring of 2021, according to the company's website.

The Boring Company's goal is to build a tunnel infrastructure for fast, safe and comfortable transportation through Loop and Hyperloop systems. “It is necessary to quickly introduce innovations to increase the speed of building tunnels and reduce their cost,” the organization said in a statement.

As part of the competition, the company will invite participants to compete in digging a small 30-meter tunnel with a cross-sectional area of 0.2 square meters or a diameter of 0.5 meters. The winners will be determined in three categories - by the speed of the tunnel, the rate of completion of the finished project and the accuracy of the underground line. The quality of the work done will be evaluated, inter alia, using a reduced copy of the Tesla car on the remote control.

The Boring Company invites students, independent specialists and companies from any country to participate in the contest. The first stage of the competition will begin in the spring of 2021.

The Boring Company is a tunnel construction company founded by Elon Musk in 2016. The organization aims to create an underground infrastructure for car traffic. At the end of 2018, the company opened a two-kilometer underground tunnel near Los Angeles.
